“For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me.” 2 Samuel 22:40
This is one of those verses that I read and I think, “Woah! That’s been in here the whole time?!” In fact that happens to me a lot. God has an amazing way of making verses jump off the page to us at exactly when we need it. This is one of David’s songs, when he praises God for delivering him from his enemies and from Saul.
When I read it, that word ‘battle’ sticks out at me first. I think about actual political/economic/social battles that go on all over the world. I think about people battling for their lives due to sickness or injury. I think about battles in relationships, and the struggles that come with work or school. And I think about the battle that the gypsy children in Târnăveni, Romania face every day. Sometimes, it’s overwhelming.
What I do know is that God is in control and He is fighting on our behalf. I know that he sees our battles much differently than we do. Sometimes we are utterly blind to the work He is doing. But I trust that God IS working and He always, always, always will carry us through our trials. Our pain, frustrations, discouragement, or worry do not prevent him from doing His work. He is always with us whether we realize it or not. In the end, everything does work out, just not always like you planned.
In the mean time, we can look to Him and receive His strength. My mom had something similar in her devotion today that she shared with me: our help comes from God and He promises He won’t sleep or slumber. Sometimes, in our humanness, it might feel differently (Lent for Everyone):
“…our hearts go out as well to all those who live with the times when it seems as though God has indeed been asleep, as though the sun and the moon are hostile, as though all kinds of evil have won the day, and the comforting business of going out and coming in has been cancelled for ever by sickness, accident or a roadside bomb. Somehow, in Jesus, the promises come true again but at a different level. To see this takes courage and perseverance.”
There are some really tough battles being fought, but Jesus has already won the greatest victory. I don’t want to rely on my strength but His. I want my faith to overcome my fear. After all, “The One who reigns forever, He is a friend of mine. The God of angel armies, is always by my side.” I can’t thank all of you enough for being part of my army too.
